What is CBD?

We are sure that lately you do not stop reading or hearing about this substance but, do you really know what CBD is? For those of you who still don’t know what it means, you can’t miss this post. We are going to explain what it is, what differentiates it from THC and what the World Health Organization says about it. Here we go!

What is CBD?

CBD is nothing more than cannabidiol, a natural component of hemp. It is just one of more than 140 cannabinoids discovered and identified in the herbal plant (Hemp Sativa L.). CBD is the most abundant cannabinoid in hemp plants and can be found in the flowers and trichomes of all hemp strains.

Is CBD safe?

CBD oils that contain less than the legal limit of THC are generally safe. In our case, all our oils are THC-free, so there is no need to worry about the side effects of high THC products.

CBD does not get you high, is not addictive and is certainly not harmful to your health. The main problem with this substance is that since it comes from hemp, many people confuse it with hemp and its effects.

CBD and THC: main differences

THC is considered a “notorious” cannabinoid because its psychoactive effects are the main reason why hemp use is rejected and in many cases even banned.

Fortunately, misconceptions and prejudices are slowly fading away, but THC levels above 0.2% are still prohibited by law.

CBD, on the other hand, is a completely legal and non-psychoactive compound, which has a significant effect on the peripheral nervous system and the immune system. It can be said that what CBD does is to help balance our endocannabinoid system which has a great impact on numerous brain functions (pain perception, movement, emotions, sleep, etc.).

How is CBD produced?

As we have already mentioned, CBD is one of the most abundant components in the flowers of almost all hemp strains. For millennia, CBD and other cannabinoids were obtained by steeping hemp in oils (hemp macerate), making teas and smoking.

Today, the same methods are still used to obtain CBD, but as technology and knowledge have advanced, new and more efficient extraction methods have been discovered.

All Upani oils are obtained by CO2 extraction. While it is true that the supercritical method is often used, we have opted for the subcritical method. This is because it does not require extraction at high temperatures or pressure, so the positive properties of the plant are not affected.

It is true that the supercritical method produces a higher oil yield and, therefore, a lower production cost. However, at Upani we have opted for the second method, which, although it has a higher cost, avoids the thermal degradation of cannabinoids and terpenes, guaranteeing a pure final product.

Is CBD legal?

Just as the consumption of THC is not legal in many parts of the world, the same is not true for CBD. Nowadays a lot of research is being done on the benefits of CBD, such as a natural remedy against anxiety or menstrual pains, among others.

So much so, that the World Health Organization has already published a report on the subject which specifies that CBD does not generate addiction, nor have adverse reactions been found. In this WHO study they also point out the benefits that its consumption can bring. If you want more information, we leave the study in this link so that you can evaluate it yourselves.
